Andy Green Hits 406 MPH in Hydrogen-Powered Car at Bonneville

The engines that powered this record car came from an unexpected place.

A 64-year-old retired British fighter pilot named Andy Green pointed a 32-foot yellow car down a strip of salt in Utah and hit 406.320 mph. The engines buried under the bodywork did not come from some secret racing lab. They started life as the same motors that go into construction diggers. That is the strange, brilliant thing about this whole story. The fastest hydrogen-powered vehicle on the planet is, at its core, two excavator engines wearing a very expensive costume.

It happened on August 11, 2026, at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah. The car is called the JCB Hydromax, built by the British company better known for the yellow backhoes you see parked at every road job in America. The FIA, the group that governs world motorsport, verified it as the highest speed ever reached by a hydrogen-powered vehicle. And the number blew past the old mark by more than 220 mph.

A digger engine doing 406 mph

Here is where it stops being a normal speed story. The two engines inside the Hydromax are based on JCB's production 4.8-liter, four-cylinder hydrogen unit, code-named 448ABH2. In the version bolted into actual construction machinery, that engine makes 74 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. Modest. The kind of motor that runs a loader all day without complaint.

For the record car, the engineers pushed that same basic architecture to roughly 800 horsepower each. That is more than a tenfold jump. Put two of them in one car and you get around 1,600 horsepower driving all four wheels. As one writer who watched it in person put it, the car preserves the sound, the vibration, even the manual shifting that gearheads love, just without the fumes. The only thing leaving the exhaust as it crossed the timing traps was water vapor.

The point JCB keeps hammering is that these were not custom one-off race motors. The crankshaft is the exact same one used in JCB's production 448 hydrogen and diesel engines. One engine sits behind the driver, one sits in front. Same hardware you could theoretically find inside a machine digging a foundation somewhere in England right now.

The only man to break the sound barrier on land

You do not hand a car like this to just anyone. Andy Green is the fastest man ever to travel on the ground, full stop. Back in October 1997, he drove the twin-jet ThrustSSC to 763.035 mph across the Black Rock Desert in Nevada and became the only person to break the sound barrier in a car. That absolute land speed record still stands today, almost 30 years later. Nobody has touched it.

Green is a retired Royal Air Force Wing Commander, which explains a lot about why he stays so calm strapped inside a machine going faster than most small planes fly. He also has history with JCB. In August 2006, he drove the company's Dieselmax to a diesel land speed record of 350.092 mph on this very same salt. Coming back 20 years later to do it again with hydrogen, and beating his own diesel number, is the sort of full-circle detail that made this run stand out.

"Bonneville is the spiritual home of the world land speed record, and JCB Hydromax has just written itself into that history," Green said afterward. "The car was terrific, stable, strong and fast."

Two runs, one hour, opposite directions

A land speed record is not just one flat-out blast. FIA rules require two timed runs in opposite directions, and both have to happen within a single hour. Then they average the two. The reason is fairness. Any wind, any tilt in the surface, any advantage helping you one way should hurt you on the return trip, so the average is the honest number.

On the morning run, the Hydromax averaged 400.623 mph. Green then turned it around and came back the other way at 412.135 mph. Split the difference and you get the official 406.320 mph that now sits in the record books. He had a 10-mile straightaway to build up to it, which sounds like plenty until you remember he also had to slow a car from over 400 mph back down to a stop. More on that in a second. The full two-run breakdown shows just how consistent the machine was in both directions.

Every record it wiped off the board

The old hydrogen combustion record was 185.5 mph, set by BMW's H2R way back in 2004. That benchmark had stood for 22 years. The Hydromax more than doubled it. Not nudged it, doubled it and kept going.

It did not stop there either. The run also beat the hydrogen fuel cell record of 303 mph and the electric vehicle record of 342 mph. Add all of that up and the Hydromax is now the fastest clean-energy vehicle of any kind on Earth, no asterisks. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem called it "a truly historic milestone for motorsport," and said it shows how performance and sustainability can go together. The list of records it toppled in one morning is a little ridiculous for a single car.

Ice, parachutes, and brakes borrowed from aircraft

The engineering details are honestly where this gets fun. There are no cooling inlets on the car. Instead, the Hydromax carries tanks packed with ice, one in the nose and one in the hump behind the driver. Each run burns through 250 kg of ice, roughly 550 pounds, and the crew drains and refills the tanks between passes. That is a lot of ice for a machine crossing a desert.

Each titanium turbo compressor spins at more than 150,000 rpm at close to 300 degrees Celsius, pushing about a bathtub of air every half second. Stopping the thing is its own problem. Land speed cars rely mostly on parachutes, and the Hydromax carries a primary and a backup chute. But the team wanted one more layer. Regular racing brakes could not handle the heat, so they built an aircraft-inspired stack of friction surfaces that can stop the car from top speed if everything else fails. Why they always do this on the salt

The Bonneville Salt Flats are about 100 miles west of Salt Lake City, and they have pulled speed chasers in since the very first race there in 1914. It is a remnant of a prehistoric lake bed, a flat crust of salt sitting on top of a shallow aquifer. That water underneath actually helps cool the tires, and the dry desert air plus the low-friction surface make it close to ideal for going fast in a straight line.

A few dozen JCB staff members and reporters watched this one from a distance through binoculars and cameras. Company owner Anthony Bamford and his family flew in by private jet to watch it happen. When your car is doing 400-plus mph, standing far back is the only sensible spot.

What a construction company gets out of a speed record

The obvious question is why a company that sells diggers cares about going fast on salt. The answer is money and proof. JCB has poured $130 million into a hydrogen engine program, and this record is essentially a giant billboard for it. Chairman Lord Anthony Bamford put it bluntly: the record was set by production-based engines, the same ones powering JCB machines right now, and the goal is to show hydrogen works today at the highest level with zero emissions.

JCB has a long habit of these stunts. The company holds the record for the world's fastest tractor at 135.191 mph with its Fastrac, and the fastest backhoe loader at 72.58 mph. A 406 mph hydrogen streamliner is a different level of flex entirely. The timing also lines up with business plans in the States, since JCB is opening a new $500 million factory in San Antonio, Texas, that is expected to employ 1,500 people.

The week before the FIA run, the Hydromax had already broken 368 mph during Bonneville Speed Week, setting a Southern California Timing Association record in the Blown Gas Streamliner class. So the 406 number was not a fluke or a lucky gust. It was the payoff of a car that had been climbing all summer. The record still needs official ratification from the FIA, but the president was already praising it before the paperwork cleared. For a machine running on repurposed digger engines and 550 pounds of ice per pass, that is a heck of a way to close out the season.
