Miss Austria Dead at Only 22

Lucia Sisic, the reigning Miss Austria, has died at the age of 22. Mission Austria, the organization that runs the country's Miss and Mister Austria competitions, confirmed her death in a social media post on Monday.

An official cause of death has not been made public. Sisic was born with a congenital heart valve defect and had gone through seven heart procedures during her life, but no one has confirmed that her condition had anything to do with her death.

She was from Vienna and had held the Miss Austria crown since 2024, which made her one of the country's most recognizable young pageant figures. Her death was described as sudden, and people close to her said she was gone far too soon.

Her family had roots in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and she carried that heritage proudly through her public life in Austria. She was known as much for talking openly about her medical history as she was for the sash.

The pageant broke the news itself

Mission Austria did not wait for the story to leak. "It is with great shock and deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of our Miss Austria 2024, Lucia Sisic," the group wrote in the post. The message was signed by the organization's CEO, Kerstin Rigger, and her husband, Jörg.

The tribute focused on who she was, not just the title she carried. "Lucia will be remembered as a wonderful young woman. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and all those close to her during this difficult time," it read. It closed with a personal goodbye: "Dear Lucia, you will always remain a part of our Miss Austria family. Rest in peace."

Why she was still the current Miss Austria

Sisic wore the crown for an unusually long time. She won Miss Austria in 2024, and no national pageant was held after that. The contests that would normally have run in 2025 and 2026 were called off for lack of sponsors, the Kurier reported, so she never handed the title to a successor.

That is how a 22-year-old was still the sitting Miss Austria two years after her win. The title simply stayed with her, and it was still hers on the day she died.

Seven heart procedures, starting when she was a kid

The heart condition ran through Sisic's whole life. She was born with a valve defect and started treatment when she was a small child. By the end she had been through seven heart procedures.

One of them nearly took her life. During an operation in 2017, at age 13, she had to be resuscitated, and the aftermath left her with nerve damage in her left leg and foot. She had to learn to walk again.

The illness shaped her childhood in smaller ways too. She was kept out of some school sports on medical advice, and she remembered feeling left out. "Sports weeks happened without me," she said in a 2024 interview. "My childhood was simply different, but it also made me strong."

She was clear that she was not fishing for sympathy. She wanted her story to help other people who were going through something hard. "I don't want pity, I want to encourage others!" she said.

She also made a point of thanking the doctors who kept her alive. In an August 2024 Instagram post, she credited the pediatric cardiology specialists who treated her at Vienna General Hospital. "Thanks to the specialists and the dedicated doctors, who have always saved my life with great efforts, I have overcome many difficult moments and have been able to live a fulfilling life," she wrote.

Even with all of that history, coverage of her death has stopped short of blaming her heart. No official statement has tied her condition to how she died, and no cause has been announced at all.

'Golden moments' and a hoped-for break

Her seventh procedure came in September 2025, and she thought it might buy her a long stretch of peace. "I have now also got my seventh procedure behind me," she wrote, saying she was overjoyed to finally get a break, hopefully for a few years.

She kept posting in the months that followed. Earlier that summer she shared holiday photos from Bosnia and Herzegovina, where her family had roots in the Bosanska Posavina region.

Her final post went up on Aug. 12. It showed her in a gold gown, and the caption was just two words: "Golden moments."

From a last-minute entry to the national crown

Sisic did not spend years chasing a pageant career. She signed up for Miss Vienna on fairly short notice and competed under the personal motto "Be Yourself."

She won the Miss Vienna 2024 title in January, coming through several presentation and fashion rounds. She later said the jury had not known about her heart condition, because she did not want it to sway their decision. The win gave her a shot at the national level.

On Sept. 10 that year she took the national crown at Vienna Fashion Week, winning Miss Austria 2024. By then her heart condition had been reported in the Austrian press.

Tributes from her pageant family and her community

Christopher Dengg, crowned Mister Austria in 2024, held office alongside her and said the loss hit him hard. "I am deeply shocked," he said. "She was like a sister to me, especially in the time when we held office together. She will be greatly missed by all of us."

Miroslav Piplica, a family friend, wrote a longer message on Facebook. "Our Lucia has gone, much too soon and forever," he wrote, closing with, "Rest in God's peace, our dear angel."

Austria's Croatian cultural community also honored her, using the spelling Lucija Šišić. It called her a source of pride to her parents and to the community, remembering her smile and warmth as much as her success on stage.

Sisic is survived by her parents and her sister. No funeral details have been released.
