Wednesday evening was supposed to be about caps, gowns, and family photos. Instead, a parking lot in Fairfield, California turned into a crime scene minutes after a high school graduation ceremony ended. An 18-year-old is dead. Three other people, including an 11-year-old child, were rushed to the hospital. And as of late Wednesday night, the shooter was still on the loose.

Here's everything we know so far about what happened, who was affected, and where the investigation stands right now.

What Happened at Fairfield High School

At approximately 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, gunfire broke out in the parking lot of Fairfield High School, located at 205 East Atlantic Avenue in Fairfield, California. The school sits about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. But the graduation ceremony that had just wrapped up wasn't actually for Fairfield High. It was for Sem Yeto High School, a continuation high school that shares the same physical campus with Fairfield High.

The ceremony itself had ended. People were milling around in the parking lot, doing what every family does after a graduation. Taking pictures. Hugging. Celebrating. Then the shots rang out. Police quickly classified it as a "large scale incident" and dispatched multiple officers along with ambulances to the scene.

The Victims

Four people were struck by gunfire. The youngest was just 11 years old. The other two surviving victims were 20 and 25. All three were transported to area hospitals, and as of Wednesday night, their medical conditions had not been publicly released.

The fourth victim, an 18-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not publicly identified the deceased, and they haven't confirmed whether that person was a student at Sem Yeto High School or Fairfield High or someone else entirely. That distinction matters, because the crowd at a graduation ceremony is a mix of students, parents, siblings, extended family, and friends. Anybody could have been standing in that parking lot.

The fact that an 11-year-old was among those shot tells you everything about the kind of crowd that was gathered. This was a family event. Little kids were there watching their older siblings or cousins walk across a stage. And now one of them is in a hospital bed.

The Scene in the Parking Lot

Witnesses and neighbors described the chaos that followed the gunshots. Amanda Prieto, whose backyard borders the Fairfield High School parking lot, told local media she was on the phone in her backyard when she heard the shots. She described people screaming and running through the parking lot, which is about as horrifying as it gets when you realize those people were seconds earlier smiling for family photos.

Amanda and her husband Luis both spoke with reporters. Amanda said she believed it was a single gunman based on the cadence and number of shots she heard. That detail hasn't been officially confirmed by police, but it's one of the few firsthand accounts available from someone who was within earshot.

A man who attended the actual ceremony told reporters he heard shots fired as photographs were being taken outside. One moment you're posing with your cap and diploma. The next you're running for your life. The contrast is gut-wrenching.

Roads surrounding the school were quickly closed and placed under lockdown as patrol vehicles and ambulances flooded the area. Police allowed people on foot to leave the parking lot, but the entire block was essentially sealed off for hours.

The Graduation Ceremony Itself

The commencement ceremony for Sem Yeto High School began at 6 p.m. near Schafer Stadium on the Fairfield High campus. A video of the ceremony had been posted to YouTube, and according to reports, nothing appeared to go wrong during the actual event. The ceremony finished. People filed out. And then, roughly an hour and fifteen minutes after it started, the shooting happened in the parking lot just outside.

Sem Yeto is a continuation high school, which in California means it serves students who may have fallen behind in a traditional school setting. These are often kids who dealt with tough circumstances and worked hard to get to graduation day. That context makes what happened even harder to stomach. For many of those graduates, walking across that stage was a real achievement. And this is what came after.

No Suspect in Custody

As of late Wednesday night, no one had been arrested. Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea, who served as the department's spokesperson throughout the evening, confirmed multiple times that no suspect was in custody. At an 11 p.m. update, she declined to comment on whether anyone had been detained but said there was no ongoing threat to the community.

That's a tricky message. On one hand, police are telling residents they're safe. On the other, the person who shot four people in a crowded parking lot hasn't been caught yet. Police said they would release further updates on Thursday morning.

Some early, unconfirmed reports from witnesses described the possible shooter as a black male juvenile, but police had not officially confirmed any suspect description as of their last press conference. A manhunt was underway Wednesday night.

Local Officials React

Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez posted on Facebook shortly before 8 p.m. that an "active shooter chase" was taking place in Fairfield. Her initial post referred to those shot as students, which she later edited to say "individuals" once more details became available. It's a reminder of how fast misinformation can spread in the first hours after something like this. Even elected officials were struggling to get the story straight in real time.

Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy released a statement on social media saying she did not yet have official details to share. Solano County Supervisor Wanda Williams said on social media that the shooting saddened her.

Ilana Israel Samuels, a spokesperson for the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District, confirmed the shooting to reporters and said: "The shooting took place after the Sem Yeto High School graduation ceremonies had ended, and the police are gathering details. This is an active investigation and we have no additional information to share at this time. Our thoughts are with the individuals affected."

Schools Will Stay Open

The school district announced that classes will continue as scheduled through the rest of the week at both Fairfield High and Sem Yeto High. That decision signals that officials don't believe there's an ongoing danger to students on campus, though it's hard to imagine kids and teachers going about their normal routines the morning after something like this happened in their parking lot.

The Solano County Sheriff's Office confirmed it was assisting Fairfield police with the investigation, meaning this is now a multi-agency effort. The Fairfield Police Department is leading the case and held multiple press conferences Wednesday night to keep the public informed, though the details released were understandably limited given how early the investigation was.

What Comes Next

Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Fairfield Police Department at (707) 428-7300. In a situation like this, where no suspect is in custody and the shooting happened in a crowded public space, tips from witnesses could be the thing that breaks the case open.

There were potentially hundreds of people in and around that parking lot when the shots were fired. Some of them may have captured something on their phones, whether they realized it or not. Many were already recording or photographing the post-ceremony celebrations. That footage could prove critical.

For the families who were there Wednesday night, the memory of what should have been one of the proudest days of their lives is now permanently tied to something else entirely. An 18-year-old is gone. A child is in the hospital. And a community is left trying to make sense of violence at an event that's supposed to represent new beginnings.

This story is still developing. We'll update as more information becomes available from the Fairfield Police Department and other agencies involved in the investigation.
